Benefit planned for crash victim
A spaghetti dinner is being held on Sunday to benefit a Nesquehoning native recovering from a life-threatening car crash.
Timothy Whitehead, 30, was driving with his cousin on Route 895 in Andreas the night before Mother's Day. Whitehead was the passenger when the driver lost control of the 2006 Hyundai Tiburon going 70 to 80 mph. Whitehead was ejected 100 feet from the vehicle and landed in a nearby field. He suffered internal bleeding, brain trauma, and a broken hip, back, pelvis, tibia, fibula and femur. Whitehead was taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital by ambulance, where he slipped into a coma.Doctors informed his family that he would likely either die or live in a vegetative state. It was considered a miracle when Whitehead awoke from his coma after two weeks and was responsive. After spending 17 days in the hospital, Whitehead's bill came out to $650,000. He currently needs crutches to walk, and has to wait until he can put more weight on his legs to start physical therapy. "It's been one thing after another. One body part will stop hurting and then another part will start," Whitehead said.Whitehead lives in White Haven and worked in Quakertown as a forklift driver before the crash. "He's looking at a year before he can go back to work, if he ever can. There's a chance he'll never be able to work again," Tim's sister Jennifer Whitehead said.Along with the hospital expenses, Tim also supports his 7-year-old daughter, Madison, as a single parent, and is unable to afford the medication needed for his recovery. The spaghetti dinner will be held at Meed's United Methodist Church in Nesquehoning and will have seatings at 12:30, 3:30 and 5:30 p.m. Takeout is available from 12:30 to 5 p.m.Donations are $8 per adult and $6 per child. Takeout is $8 per person.Future events planned to benefit Tim are a Chinese auction, a golf tournament at Mahoning Valley Country Club, and a co-ed volleyball game. For more information, to reserve tickets, or to make a donation, call 570-778-8470, 570-582-9772 or 570-225-8226.
