West Penn senior day
The West Penn Lions and Lioness clubs will sponsor the annual West Penn Senior Fun Day on Aug. 1 at the West Penn Park. Activities will begin at 11:30 a.m.The event is open to all township residents age 62 and older and will be held rain or shine.The day will include free entertainment, free food (lunch and supper), informational sessions, games and lots of fellowship.Preregistration is required to ensure there is enough food to go around. To register, call Melissa at 570-386-4138 no later than July 24.Band campThe Tamaqua Raider Band will hold its next summer rehearsal from 9-11 a.m. Tuesday for the instrumentalists.Drum line rehearsal will be held from 9-11 a.m. Thursday and July 23.Old and New Night will be held on July 28. New members will rehearse from 4-6 p.m. All instrumentalists and majorettes will rehearse from 6-8 p.m.Band Camp will begin at 8 a.m. Aug. 3. Camp is mandatory for all band members.All rehearsals will be held in the band room.Majorettes and silks continue to rehearse from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesdays and 9-11 a.m. Fridays.Free movieThe East End Playground Association continues its popular free movie presentations this summer. The next film will be "Big Hero 6," which was rescheduled from July 9 due to the weather. The film will be shown.The movie will begin at dusk, which is approximately 8:30 p.m. Rain date will be Friday, same time.The park is located on Mountain Avenue in the East End section of Tamaqua. Movie lovers of all ages are welcome. There is no admission fee and the concession stand will be open.Senior citizensThe Tamaqua Senior Citizens group met July 9 at the Tamaqua YMCA, 1201 E. Broad St. The meeting was attended by 62 members and one guest, Thelma Paul.President Melody Weicker conducted the business session, and Jacque Patrick provided the inspirational reading, "Special Occasion Dilemma."Guest speaker Jane Kinzel of Manor Car, Pottsville, offered tips on summer health care.The annual picnic will be held Aug. 13 at the West Penn Rod and Gun Club.The group meets at 1 p.m. every Thursday. The next meeting will be July 16.Anyone 55 or older is welcome to join. The YMCA is handicap accessible.Bethany ECThe Rev. Kevin Roberts will officiate at the 8 and 10:30 a.m. worship services this Sunday in Bethany Evangelical Congregational Church. Sunday school will meet at 9:15 a.m.Also on Sunday, the monthly service at the Hometown Nursing Center will be held at 2:30 p.m.Activities for next week include: Tuesday, prayer time at 8:30 a.m.; Wednesday, sew much more growth group meets at 10 a.m., Tamaqua youth ministry meets at 6:30 p.m.; Thursday, Trail talk growth group meets at 6:30 p.m.; Saturday, EST training begins at noon, TYM movie night at 8:30 p.m.
