Fireline Road in Lower Towamensing Township remained closed early this morning following a two-car crash Thursday night.

Lehighton State Police said the incident occurred at 7:22 p.m. when a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee operated by Matthew J. Castellaneta, 32, of Palmerton, was traveling north on Golf Road approaching its intersection with Fireline Road, and a 2007 Chevrolet Suburban operated by Jeremiah J. Croizier, 37, of Lehighton, was traveling east on Fireline Road approaching its intersection with Golf Road.At that time, the Grand Cherokee failed to stop at a clearly posted stop sign at the intersection, and traveled into the pathway of the oncoming Suburban.Initial impact occurred as the Grand Cherokee was struck on its driver's side by the Suburban's front end.After initial impact, the Grand Cherokee continued in an northeast direction, spinning counter clockwise, and hitting a utility pole with its passenger side.The Grand Cherokee came to final rest facing southwest of the northeast corner of the intersection.After initial impact, the Suburban spun counter clockwise, coming to final rest facing west off the westbound shoulder of Fireline Road.Castellaneta was taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital by Palmerton Ambulance for a medical evaluation.Craig C. Mulhollem, 37, of Palmerton, a front-seat passenger in the Suburban, was taken to Palmerton Hospital by Palmerton Ambulance for a medical evaluation.It was unknown if Castellaneta, who was not wearing any safety equipment, sustained any injuries.Croizier, who was wearing his seat belt, was uninjured, while Mulhollem, who was not wearing any safety equipment, sustained minor injury.Both vehicles sustained major damage and were towed from the scene by Paul's Towing.A utility pole was damaged, resulting in downed wires.The state Department of Transportation and Lower Towamensing Township closed Fireline Road because of the damaged utility pole.Members of the Aquashicola Fire Company and Palmerton Ambulance assisted on scene.Castellaneta has been charged in the crash.
