Man charged with hurting baby heads to court

Anthony Dylan Shetrompf appeared before District Justice Casimir Kosciolek on Wednesday afternoon for a preliminary hearing on charges of aggravated assault and endangering the welfare of a child.

The affidavit of probable cause describes the incident leading up to the arrest. Lansford police officers questioned Shetrompf regarding an assault on his 2-month-old daughter.After being read his rights, Shetrompf, 21, of Lansford, admitted to having had an argument with this wife, Katelyn Shetrompf.He said he went to check on his daughter because the baby was crying in her crib.He told police that he aggressively picked up the child, that he heard a pop when he realized that the child's leg was wrapped in a blanket.Shetrompf then stated that he grabbed the child about the rib cage again, more aggressively.When he realized he was hurting the child he went to place her back in the crib and accidentally dropped her from approximately one foot above the mattress.Shetrompf and his wife then took the child to St. Luke's Hospital-Coaldale campus for treatment.Shetrompf was arrested on April 2 on felony aggravated assault and endangering the welfare of children, as well as misdemeanor simple assault and recklessly endangering another person.The infant was treated for seven broken ribs, a spiral fracture midshaft right femur and a broken shoulder.Also according to the affidavit, the child exhibited a number of old injuries.Shetrompf waived his preliminary hearing and his case will be transferred to the Carbon County Court of Common Pleas.Shetrompf was ordered to appear at the adult probation office on Thursday for pretrial services.Shetrompf, who has been in the Carbon County Correctional Facility since being arrested on April 2, was released on $5,000 unsecured bail.Other conditions of his release include having no contact with his children.
