Coaldale police cited two people after a May 17 incident that involved a 2-year-old child.
At 3:16 p.m., Noel Abadia, 34, went to the police station and said he needed help for his son. Abadia said he received a call from the boy's mother, Kayla Leibowitz, 26, the day before. She was extremely upset because the child had swallowed four of her pills. He wasn't sure if the pills were Xanax or Clonazepam. He went to her home, at 274 Third St., and found the boy to be "completely out of it."Instead of taking the child to a hospital, because Leibowitz was afraid of the consequences, he spent about an hour with the toddler, who started "acting better."Abadia then left with instructions to Leibowitz to "watch him closely through the night."The next morning he tried calling on the phone for an update but there was no answer.Around noon he made his way to Coaldale and found the boy to still be suffering adverse effects of the drugs. They argued about getting help for the child. He went outside to call Leibowitz's mother and was locked out of the house. He walked around to the side, pushed in an air conditioner and entered the home. They argued again. When he said he was going to police she threatened to harm herself and the child. The officer contacted Schuylkill County Children and Youth and was directed to remove the child from the home immediately.Several officers went to the home. They were initially denied entry but were able to arrest Leibowitz and take the child. The tyke was transported to the hospital for evaluation and treatment. Both parents were charged with endangering the welfare of a child.
