Schuylkill boy is struck by vehicle; seriously injured

A 12-year-old Schuylkill County boy was struck by a vehicle and seriously injured on Monday.

State police at Frackville said the incident occurred about 4:20 p.m. at the intersection of Coal and Pine streets, in the village of Cumbola, Blythe Township.Troopers said the boy was traveling downhill on Pine Street (east direction), operating a nonmotorized plastic purple toy scooter while Herman Garcia, 18, of Reading, driving a 1999 Honda Accord, was southbound on Coal Street.At the intersection the boy failed to stop for a posted stop sign and entered the intersection where the front of the Honda impacted the scooter in the middle of the intersection.Upon impact the boy was knocked off the scooter and came to rest on the road.The boy was transported to a landing zone and then flown by medical helicopter to the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Cedar Crest. Troopers termed his injuries as severe.Garcia and two rear passengers, a female and male, both age 5, were all not injured.
