Schuylkill gets money for transportation
Public transportation is on a roll in Schuylkill County.
Commissioners on Wednesday approved Schuylkill Transportation System's application for a total of $2,865,888 in state and federal grant money to pay for fixed route and shared ride services.The fixed route program will be funded through $370,374 in federal funding and $1,524,514 in state funding.The money will be combined with $204,050 in other funding and the county's $169,170 share. That comes to a total of $2,268,108.That will allow STS to provide 20,210 hours of bus service for an estimated 208,585 passenger trips from July 1 through June 30, 2016.The shared ride program, for older adults and people with disabilities, doles out $775,000 for older adults and $196,000 for people with disabilities, for a total of $971,000.The grant money will allow STS to provide about 44,500 discounted shared ride trips for older adults and 11,510 trips for people with disabilities for the coming fiscal year. The grant applications, which go through the state Department of Transportation, were part of a package of approvals needed to facilitate the Consolidated Operating Assistance grants.In other matters, commissioners approved the appointment of Denise Grajewski of Shenandoah to the Mental Health/Developmental Services Advisory Board from June 3 through Dec. 31, 2017.Also on Wednesday, commissioners renewed a five-year lease agreement between the county and James McAndrew for a building at 33 S. Main St., Shenandoah, which houses the district judge offices.The lease begins July 1 and expires June 30, 2020. The rent is $2,083 per month, which is $11.36 per square foot.In a related matter, commissioners also renewed a five-year lease agreement with McAndrew for 2,288 square feet of storage space at the same address.The storage space is divided among the district justice, Adult Probation, and Juvenile Justice at 112 square feet, 650 square feet, and 1,526 square feet, respectively.The total monthly rent is $590, which is $3.10 per square feet. The lease term begins Aug. 1 and expires July 31, 2020.
