TUSSEYVILLE, Pa. (AP) - Officials say a male peregrine was shot and left for dead in central Pennsylvania over Memorial Day weekend.

WJAC-TV reports (http://bit.ly/1FSdqTd ) an X-ray shows the bird was wounded with a shotgun in Tusseyville. That's about 130 miles east of Pittsburgh.

Officials say a citizen found the bird unable to move and called Centre Wildlife Care to see if they could rescue the bird.

Robyn Grabowski, executive director of Centre Wildlife Care, says the bird had to be euthanized because of its injuries.

Grabowski says peregrines are endangered in Pennsylvania even though they're no longer on the federal endangered species list.

It is illegal in Pennsylvania to shoot any bird of prey including eagles, hawks, owls, vultures and falcons. If convicted, the violator could face fines and jail time.
