Man fled police in a four-wheeler

Lansford police have charged a borough man who they say was speeding when he drove a four-wheeler down the sidewalk in town on a Sunday morning in March, then took off when an officer tried to stop him.

Corey Schlier Jr., 28, of 328 E. Bertsch St., faces charges of fleeing and eluding, driving with not insurance, careless driving, driving on a sidewalk, failure to use a turn signal, general lighting requirements, driving without a valid registration and inspection stemming from the March 29 incident.A preliminary hearing is scheduled before District Judge Casimir Kosciolek of Lansford for 2:30 p.m. June 10.According to an affidavit of probable cause filed by officer Shawn M. Nunemacher, here's what happened:At about 11 a.m. that day, Nunemacher was on patrol on East Bertsch Street, approaching Chestnut, when he heard vehicles approaching. He saw two four-wheelers speeding down Chestnut Street, one on the sidewalk, "with complete disregard for their safety or others'.""They turned toward me on Bertsch Street so fast that it caused the back end of the vehicle to slide out and fishtail around the corner," Nunemacher wrote.Neither operator obeyed the stop sign or used turn signals. As the quads came toward his cruiser, Nunemacher turned on the emergency lights and got out, giving hand signals and verbal commands to stop. The driver of a yellow Suzuki, later identified as Schlier, slowed down, looked directly at him, and then sped off down Bertsch Street. The operator of a yellow Kawasaki, identified as Michael Miller, stopped.Nunemacher found the Suzuki parked outside 328 E. Bertsch St. The operator, Schlier, came out of the house, wearing the same clothes he had been wearing when he slowed to look at Nunemacher.Nunemacher found the quad had no registration, inspection, or insurance, and was missing several pieces of required lighting equipment. Schlier said he was told by another officer that he had permission to ride on the street.
