Diakon Community Services needs volunteers for its Meals on Wheels program in the Pottsville, Tamaqua, Coaldale, McAdoo, Barnesville and Ringtown areas, says Tracy Miller, Meals on Wheels coordinator.
"All ages of volunteers are needed," she says, "but delivering meals is an ideal way for high school students to complete their community-service requirements."Volunteers are needed Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., though some routes represent the commitment of only one hour of time."Our volunteer drivers provide meals and wellness checks for many older adults," says Miller, "and we're very grateful for their service. However, more volunteers are urgently needed."Time commitment is flexible with volunteers serving once a month, weekly, or three days per week. Volunteers receive training and may claim mileage reimbursement."We hope people will consider offering this small act of service to their neighbors that not only can improve their quality of life, but also provides a huge sense of satisfaction."For more information, contact Miller at 570-624-3023.Meals on Wheels is managed by Diakon Community Services under contract with Schuylkill County Office of Senior Services, with funding from the state Department of Aging.
