Sign falls off vacant building in Lansford

Lettering from a large sign fell from a deteriorating, vacant building in the business district of Lansford Monday afternoon.

The huge letter "R" from the former Ridge Center dropped onto the sidewalk at about 3:45 p.m. in the 100 block of West Ridge Street. Some other matter around the letter also fell.Fortunately, nobody was walking past the structure at the time. The Lansford Fire Department responded. The sound of the sign falling was so loud that it was called into the Carbon County Telecommunications Commission as a "building collapse."No portion of the building fell except for the signage. Chris Angst, a lieutenant with the fire department, pulled off large, loose glass panels from the top of the two-story building. The broken glass, fallen sign and related debris were clean-up by the Lansford Borough work force.Neither fire department personnel nor borough employees at the scene knows who owns the deteriorating building, one of several run-down structures along Ridge Street. The Ridge Center has been out of business for years. It had formerly been an appliance store. There were no injuries. Also at the scene was an officer from the Lansford Police Department.Fire police from Lansford handled traffic control.
