Defendants enter guilty pleas in drug cases

Defendants in pending drug cases entered guilty pleas in Carbon County court on Monday before President Judge Roger N. Nanovic II.

Alberto Luis Rivera-Rosario, 21, of Allentown, pleaded to one count each of criminal attempt to deliver a controlled substance, delivery of a controlled substance, and possession of a firearm without a license.He was arrested on May 15, 2014, by state police at Hazleton vice unit after he sold heroin to a confidential informant in the area of 516 Franklin Ave. in Palmerton.In one sale he sold 39 bags of heroin and in a second sale, 250 bags. After the second sale he was arrested at the scene and found to have a handgun in his possession.He is facing a state prison term.Nanovic deferred sentencing so Rosario could apply for placement in the state Intermediate Punishment Program.Patrick John McLaughlin, 22, of Lehighton, pleaded to one count of possession of drug paraphernalia. He was arrested by Jim Thorpe police on Jan. 9 after he appeared at the adult probation office in the courthouse and tested positive for illegal substances.When taken into custody, police found drug paraphernalia on him.McLaughlin is serving a six to 24 month parole/probation violation sentence in Carbon and is facing a parole violation petition in Lehigh County.Nanovic placed him on probation for a year, consecutive to his current sentence, ordered he get a D&A evaluation and imposed zero tolerance on D&A use.Michael James Kieffer Jr., 31, of Coaldale, formerly of Lansford, pleaded to one count of possession of drug paraphernalia. He was arrested on Dec. 19, 2014, by Lansford police after he was taken into custody on a warrant issued out of Schuylkill County. While being taken into custody, drug paraphernalia was found on him.He was sentenced to time served (26 days) to one year in jail and ordered to get a D&A evaluation and zero tolerance imposed on D&A use.Melissa Ann Peters, 25, of Lehighton, pleaded to one count of possession of drug paraphernalia. She was arrested on Jan. 13 by state police at Lehighton following a traffic stop along Union Hill Road in Franklin Township. She was a passenger in the vehicle.She is currently in the county prison on a probation violation and has two pending drug-related charges. Peters said all the arrests are related to a drug addiction problem.Nanovic placed her on probation for a year.Each defendant sentenced must also pay court costs of about $1,000 and a $50 per month supervision fee while on probation or parole.
