Bids opened for services to seniors

The Schuylkill County commissioners on Wednesday opened two bids for food services for the Office of Senior Services.

Nutrition Inc., of Irwin, Westmoreland County offered a total bid of $503,496. That includes $158,760 for 42,000 congregate meals at 78 cents each, and $334,736 for 91,200 home delivered meals at $3.78 each.Preferred Meal Systems of Berkeley, Illinois, offered a total bid of $524,475. That includes $165,375 for 44,100 congregate meals at $3.75 each, and $359,100 for 95,760 home delivered meals also at $3.75 each.The three-year contract will be awarded after officials review the bids.In a related matter, the county received no bids for the job of contracted dietitian for the OSS.The position is required under new state mandates as of Jan. 1. OSS serves 500 meals a day through senior centers, adult day centers, Meals on Wheels and other venues.Also on Wednesday, commissioners honored county 911 dispatchers in a proclamation for National Telecommunicators Week, April 12-15."Schuylkill County enjoys the highest standards of emergency 911 dispatch services within the Commonwealth. We owe a great debt to the men and women who, by applying their expertise in telecommunications, emergency medical dispatch, law enforcement, emergency medical and fire srvices help make that achievement possible," the proclamation stated.Commissioners noted the 991 center handled more than 129,000 calls for service last year.In a related matter, commissioners named Jason Hartz and John Morgalis to the Communications Advisory Board. They replace Jason Witmier and Trent Zulick, both of whom resigned due to work committments.In other matters, commissioners approved a list of deputy tax collectors, who would step in to take over the duties of an incapacitated tax collector. The appointment of the deputies is required under a new state law.The deputy tax collectors include Michelle Kabilko of Rush Township, Mary Ann Delpais of Schuylkill Township, John M. Malay of Walker Township, Ronald W. Zeigler of West Penn Township, Sarah E. Risteter of Coaldale, and Lawrence M. McCullion of Tamaqua.Commissioners also transferred the administration of coal lands and collection of delinquent real estate taxes associated with leasing, collection of royalties, and sale of properties from the Real Estate Department to the Tax Claims Bureau.Also, commissioners will hold their next regular meeting at 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 22 in the commissioners' board room at the courthouse in Pottsville.
