Pittsburgh police probing 5 overdoses, 1 fatal, in 5 hours

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pittsburgh police are investigating a rash of five heroin overdoses in five hours, including one fatality.

Police didn't immediately release the dead victim's name, but alerted the media about the unusual cluster of overdoses that occurred in various city neighborhoods between 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Doses of heroin are typically sold in small waxed paper "stamp" bags that usually have a street "brand" name printed on them. In Tuesday's overdoses, the stamps varied - meaning police don't believe they're dealing with one especially potent supply of the drug.

Three victims were treated by paramedics with Narcan, an overdose antidote, and responded positively at those scenes. Two others had to be hospitalized, including the person who died.

Cmdr. RaShall Brackney says, "This is now an epidemic and a health crisis."
