Dear Editor,
I've seen people walking, running, jogging, pushing baby buggies on the right (incorrect) side of the road or street. They should be on the left side of the road or street, whereby the vehicles coming unseen from behind you would then be on the farther side of the road or street, so that you can SEE the ones coming closest to you! This used to be so important that it was taught in grade school, back in "the old days," when common sense was still taught there. But how can this new generation of parents teach this common sense if it wasn't taught to them in the first place? This was learned in grade school, to keep us safe as we WALKED to and from school four times a day! Remember? We were taught how to walk safely, and to use the sidewalks when there were any, not to walk in the street! We were even taught not to wear dark after dark! Now, here we are, in this great future of modern technology, with people moving along the roadways wearing headphones, and yes, even texting as they move, unaware of ANYTHING possibly coming near them. Is it any wonder pedestrians get hit and/or killed along the roadway? I've even seen mothers and fathers pushing baby buggies along the town streets, sometimes as many as three lined up out into the middle of the street, unable to see what's coming at them from behind! Then, to top it off, they're often wearing black or dark colors during evening or dusk hours! Sheer stupidity! Then, if they get hit, the vehicle driver usually gets blamed for it.Perhaps it's time to once again teach this in our schools, kindergarten to 12, and maybe have it appear on front pages of newspapers and widespread across over televisions and on the Internet, and maybe it should pop up on their little hand-held gadgets so it interferes with whatever "important" thing they are doing while not paying attention to their surroundings! Perhaps some lives can be saved.Ruthann SchlechtLehighton
