Panther Valley has grief team on site to help students cope with girl, 17, killed in crash
Grief counselors are on hand to assist distraught students at Panther Valley High School following a deadly crash that took the life of one of its students.
The Panther Valley School District is deploying a crisis intervention team to deal with trauma associated with Sunday's crash in Tamaqua that took the life of a high school senior, Autumn Lynn Young, 17, of Nesquehoning. She was killed when she lost control of her vehicle on a snow-covered curve on Route 309 near the Tamaqua and West Penn Township line.Young was an honors student according to her father and grandfather, who spoke briefly to the Times News on Monday.School officials said they were prepared to deal with potential issues that might arise in the classroom as students try to deal with shock and grief. For some, it might be the first time they've dealt with the loss of a friend or someone close."We have the FLIGHT Team at the school," said an administrative assistant Monday morning, referring to the Carbon Lehigh Intermediate Unit FLIGHT Team. The mission of the FLIGHT Team is to support crisis intervention services at school districts and their surrounding community in the aftermath of a traumatic event. The FLIGHT Team responds by sending trained professionals equipped to provide crisis response in the event of the death of a student or staff member, trauma caused by car accidents, school shootings, natural catastrophic events, suicides and child abduction. The goal of the FLIGHT Team is to help those impacted gain an understanding of grief, come to terms with loss, and support the grieving process while improving the school climate. The unit serves 17 school districts.A call to high school Principal Joseph Gunnels for specific information about the school's response was not returned. There were 25 online comments at the Times News Facebook page late Monday, with many expressing similar sentiments of heartache and shock."Heartbreaking for a life cut so short. My heart goes out to her loved ones," commented Chris Noecker.Tamantha Figueroa Rosas echoed that sentiment, "May she RIP! So tragic. Praying for her family & friends."Acquaintance Monica Arroyo reflected on Young's personality."Met her only a few times. She seemed like such a sweet girl. My heart breaks for her, her family and all. I send my prayers and condolences. Heaven truly gained another angel," Arroyo said. The victim and her family had been coping with loss for the past 10 months, according to family members.Young's mother, Monica L. Young, passed away April 29, 2014, at the age of 47.Family members were still dealing with that loss when word of the car-crash tragedy reached their home, said Young's father, Edward Kusko.According to reports, Young was returning home from a sleepover at a friend's house when the collision took place.
