Palmerton to join council of governments

Count Palmerton among the area municipalities that have agreed to join the Carbon County Council of Governments.

Borough council on a 6-0 vote Thursday approved an agreement to become an active member in the county COG. Councilman Richard Nothstein was absent.The COG is an informal, voluntary association of local government units joined together to improve cooperation, coordination and planning.Councilman Kris Hoffner said the resolution is a year-to-year agreement that costs each municipality $50 per year.Hoffner said an advantage for municipalities who choose to participate in the COG is that they could be eligible for potential grant money that's available.Borough Manager Rodger Danielson said he believes the borough's participation in the COG is a solid move."I think it's good," Danielson said. "I think it's a nice way to deal with all the other county municipalities."Electronic recyclingAlso on Thursday, council agreed to hold an electronic recycling program from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 9 in the borough garage, 402 Third St.Borough residents who bring a television 35 inches or larger to the recycling program on that date will be eligible for a $5 rebate off a future trash bill.A coupon will appear with the April utility bill. They will then need to bring their coupon along with their TV to be eligible for the rebate.
