Man with fake credit cards waives hearing
A New York man arrested by Mahoning Township police and found to have on his possession nine fraudulent credit cards and one debit card waived a scheduled preliminary hearing on the charges.
Jiang Yuan, 28, of 831 53rd St., Brooklyn, was arrested after Walmart officials reported to police that a male had been in the store using stolen credit cards.Although security video at Walmart showed at least two other males with Yuan, and another person inside a vehicle, only Yuan was arrested. He was nabbed while apparently waiting for a ride after using the stolen credit card at Walmart. The preliminary hearing was scheduled last week before District Judge Casimir Kosciolek of Lansford.Yuan appeared at the hearing in an SUV with a New York license plate. Also with him was an interpreter, since Yuan doesn't speak English. When he was arrested on Oct. 21, bail was set at $40,000 cash. When people came to post the bail, they reportedly had just $39,000 in cash, so the bail was reduced to $39,000.The arresting officer is Corey Frey of the Mahoning Township Police Department.Yuan was charged with two counts of access device fraud.Police said in addition to the credit cards and debit card, when arrested Juan also had three Walmart gift cards, which were stolen earlier in the day from Walmart stores in Hometown and Hazleton. He also had eight iTunes gift cards, which police say he purchased with the stolen cards. No charges have been filed against him in either Schuylkill or Luzerne County. The affidavit says that at 8:49 p.m. Oct. 21, police were dispatched to Walmart regarding a person using stolen credit cards. The person had fled the store. Police said the man fitting the description was observed along Frederick's Grove Road, which is located beyond the entrance to Walmart.Frey writes in the affidavit, because of a language barrier, "I had a difficult time understanding what Jiang was saying. I was able to get that he was just at Walmart and was waiting for a friend. Jiang stated that his friend was at the Chinese restaurant and would be coming for him soon."Meanwhile, Walmart received a call from Jason Green from the Scranton area who told them his bank had called and notified him that his Visa credit card was just used in the store fraudulently, the affidavit says. The stolen credit cards were:• Two from Bank of America.• Chase Continental Airlines OnePass Mastercard.• Chase GM Visa.• Chase MasterCard.• US Bank Visa.• Southwest.com Rapid Rewards Visa.• Two from Discover. When arrested, Frey said he communicated with Yuan using Google translate. The charges against Yuan have been forwarded to Carbon County Court.
