Tamaqua trio in jail

Three friends planning a move to Nevada had an abrupt change of plans last Saturday. Instead, they found themselves lodged in the Schuylkill County Prison in Pottsville.

At 8:15 p.m. that day, Tamaqua Police were dispatched to Race Street and spoke with a man who said he had just been robbed.The victim said he was walking along the street when a dark Mercury Sable with a driver and several passengers pulled up behind him.A man got out of the vehicle, causing the victim to increase his walking speed.He ordered the victim not to run, stating he had a gun. The victim stopped.The assailant pushed and shoved the victim, tearing his sweatshirt and robbing him of $40 (two $20 bills).The car and its occupants then drove away. The victim was able to take down the license plate number.Police found the vehicle stopped the car on Hunter Street.The driver was identified as Sarah Bensinger, 23. The passengers were identified as Jessica Carter, 19, and Kyle Carter, 23.The trio couldn't provide home addresses, telling officers they were in the process of moving to Nevada.The victim identified Kyle Carter as the man who robbed him. Carter had $240 in his pocket, four $50 bills and two twenties. He was arrested and handcuffed.Bensinger gave officers permission to search her car and person for the alleged gun.Instead of a weapon, officers found a spoon with residue and a syringe in her right front pocket. She was arrested.Jessica Carter was also searched. The only item she had on her person was a wad of cash, totaling $817.Her brown mini back pack told a different story. It contained a spoon with residue, a syringe, an orange baggie with suspected methamphetamine, a short straw, nine packets of heroin and approximately 60 open, empty packets, earning her the chance to be handcuffed too.Inside the car, police found a Newport box containing 10 empty wax paper baggies in the passenger side door and an additional 10 empty baggies between the driver's seat and center console. No weapon was found.All three were then arraigned before duty District Judge James Reiley.Kyle Carter was charged with robbery, theft by unlawful taking, receiving stolen property, harassment and disorderly conduct. His bail was set at $50,000 straight cash.Bensinger was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia. Her bail was set at $10,000 straight cash. Charges of driving under the influence of a controlled substance are pending.Jessica Carter was charged with possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia. Her bail was also set at $10,000 straight.
