Traffic stop nets marijuana stash
A Lansford man with no previous criminal record will face multiple drug-related charges after a traffic stop in Tamaqua.
According to a police affidavit, Robert F. Kosica, 46, was pulled over by officer Richard Bekesy at 10:20 a.m. Wednesday after Kosica's 2008 Mazda went through stop signs at Rowe and Nescopec streets and again at Rowe and Swatara streets.Police said the car was traveling too fast for conditions. When Kosica pulled his car over to the curb, officer Anthony Stanell arrived to assist Bekesy. As Stanell approached the passenger side of the vehicle he noticed a strong odor of marijuana, according to police.Stanell then walked around the rear of the vehicle and observed two large bags of marijuana and marijuana stems. He asked Kosica to step out of the car.According to the criminal complaint, Stanell asked, "What's all this?"Kosica replied, "It is what it looks like."Kosica was cuffed, searched and placed in Bekesy's patrol car.Police summoned Hope's Collision and Towing of Tamaqua, to tow Kosica's car to the police station until police could secure a search warrant.A warrant was issued at 12:14 p.m.The subsequent search turned up the following: a large plastic bag of green stems weighing 14.4 ounces, a red and clear Tupperware container with suspected marijuana weighing 3.1 ounces (later field tested by Stanell as positive), plastic container weighing 13 ounces holding suspected marijuana stems, 0.3 grams of suspected hashish (later field tested as positive), a plastic bag, glass jar container, tan shopping bag, yellow shopping bag, and clear sandwich bags all containing either suspected marijuana or green vegetable matter. Also found was a US-Magnum 1000XR scale with green residue and a large black garbage bag weighing 1 pound, 8 ounces and containing green vegetable matter.Total weight of marijuana was 4.2 pounds, according to police.Police didn't put a dollar value on the drugs uncovered, but just an ounce of marijuana goes for $100 to $200 based on Internet searches.Police charged Kosica with possession with intent to manufacture or deliver, which is a felony, along with unlawful possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, stop sign and yield sign violations and driving at an unsafe speed. At the arraignment, District Justice Stephen J. Bayer told Kosica about the seriousness of the charges, particularly possession with intent to deliver."Normally, delivery charges are high straight bail," said Bayer.Kosica told Bayer he recently moved to Lansford. He said he's been working as a nurse at Hometown Nursing Center since last summer and has worked in health care for the past 20 years, including as manager at Keystone Medical Equipment and as director of admissions at Brookmont Health Care.Kosica asked for consideration in that he has never been in trouble and works in a field where manpower shortages can impact patient care.Tamaqua police acknowledged Kosica's cooperation."I don't think he's a flight risk. He's cooperated the entire time," said Tamaqua Police Chief Rick Weaver.Bail was set at $10,000.
