No tax increase for Coaldale

During a meeting Tuesday, Coaldale Council adopted a budget which doesn't have a tax increase. It's the third straight year the borough has held the line on taxes, keeping the mils at 25.04.

Revenues are projected to be $1.9 million with expenditures at $1.8 million. To help build funds which may be needed for infrastructure repairs to the borough's aged sewer system, the sewer maintenance fee will be raised from $25 to $75.The 2015 spending plan includes two major equipment purchases, a police vehicle and a road crew truck. The new police vehicle will be a Ford Explorer costing $37,568. The new truck is a Ford F550 costing $76,000. Both vehicles will be purchased from Kovatch under the Co-stars program, and financed for six years at 4.5 percent interest.Council President Angela Krapf said the truck will be paid for using liquid fuels monies. The borough recently paid off a police cruiser, she said.In other action, council:Renewed its agreement appointing Alfred Benesch & Co. of Pottsville to provide engineering services.Approved the purchase of 50 tons of rock salt at $3,300.Hired Gary Mitchell as a part-time road department worker, as needed for plowing and other duties.Noted a grievance filed by Kenny Hankey, the borough's road worker. Hankey's grievance states that errors have been made on his paycheck. Councilman Thomas Keerans, who chairs the street committee, said Hankey filed the grievance to make sure there was a "paper trail" established while the mistakes are corrected.Voted to advertise for a new zoning officer. Former zoning officer Pete Sachon resigned in October.Observed a moment of silence before the meeting in respect for Councilwoman Linda Miller, who passed away Nov. 16.
