Man found slumped over wheel of car

A Summit Hill man has been charged by Tamaqua police after he was found slumped over the steering wheel of his car at the intersection of Hunter and Mahanoy streets on Nov. 29.

Police were dispatched to the intersection at 2:48 a.m. after a caller reported a vehicle in the intersection that had its horn blaring. On scene they found Benjamin M. Horvath, 30, of 24 E. Mountaintop Road, slumped over in the driver's seat of a Ford 350 pickup. His head was on the horn. It took officers several attempts to awaken the driver, who appeared to be drunk. When Horvath did wake up the truck drifted forward until officers convinced him to put it in park and turn off the engine. When he exited the vehicle he had a Glock 21, .45-caliber pistol attached to his right hip. The gun was removed and unloaded. A records check determined the gun was registered to George Tessitore III of Lansford. Horvath did not have a permit to carry a weapon; and his driver's license was suspended.Three field sobriety tests were given and failed. A preliminary breath test was positive for alcohol, with a reading of .12. He was then transported to St. Luke's Hospital-Miners Campus in Coaldale, for blood tests.Horvath will be charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, carrying a firearm without a license, driving without a valid license, and driving with a suspended license.
