One hurt in Tamaqua industrial mishap

A worker was taken to the hospital for injuries suffered in an early Tuesday morning incident at a Tamaqua business.

Emergency responders were dispatched by the Schuylkill Communications Center at 8:57 a.m. for a report of an industrial accident with possible entrapment at 10 West Broad St., site of M & S Do It Best Hardware store.Upon arrival, responders were directed to the small engine repair facility located to the rear of the store's garden supply center. The garden supply center is a separate building at the corner of South Railroad Street and West Cottage Avenue.According to firefighters at the scene, a worker was using a lift commonly used to repair ATVs and riding lawn mowers when a hydraulic hose apparently failed, resulting in the machinery trapping the working by the arm.The unidentified worker was treated at the scene by Tamaqua Community Ambulance personnel and transported to St. Luke's Hospital - Miners Campus, Coaldale, where he was treated for arm injuries. In an earlier incident, Tamaqua police, fire police and firefighters were dispatched to a report of a possible electrical fire about 8:25 a.m. Tuesday at an apartment building at 26 North Greenwood St.According to the 911 report, a resident reported the smell of burning rubber, which he thought might be coming from a different apartment in the building. The resident told emergency responders at the scene that he noticed the odor after he flipped a light switch.Although a distinct odor of burning rubber could be detected in the neighborhood of North Greenwood and East Mauch Chunk streets, a thorough search of the building and area found no signs of an electrical fire.In both the odor investigation and industrial mishap, traffic was rerouted by Tamaqua fire police around the Dutch Hill and South Ward areas, respectively.
