Caught! Frein in custody

The Canadensis man accused of shooting to death a state trooper and wounding another in September has been captured, state police say.

Eric Frein, 31, was taken into custody, trooper Connie Devens announced late Thursday.

"I can confirm that we have taken Eric Frein into custody. Further information will be released at a later time. No further information will be released or confirmed at this time," she wrote in a emailed release sent at 6:39 p.m. Thursday.

Police have been scouring the woods in Barrett, Price and surrounding townships since Cpl. Bryon Dickson and Trooper Alex Douglass were shot, Dickson fatally, outside the Blooming Grove barracks in Pike County at 11:50 p.m. Sept. 12.

The apparently quiet takedown of Eric Frein ended weeks of tension and turmoil in the area, as authorities at times closed schools, canceled outdoor events and blockaded roads to pursue him. Residents grew weary of hearing helicopters overhead, while small businesses suffered mounting losses and town supervisors canceled a popular Halloween parade.

State police confirmed Frein was taken into custody Thursday but released no details.

Two law enforcement officials said Frein was captured in the hangar. They weren't authorized to discuss the circumstances of Frein's arrest and spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity. A federal law enforcement official in Washington said Frein was armed when he was captured.

Police used Dickson's handcuffs when they took Frein into custody.

Frein's parents have declined to comment.

Frein, who lived with his parents in Canadensis, was described as a survivalist and expert marksman with a grudge against police.
