Parking meters to stay in downtown Lansford
For a short time at last week's meeting of Lansford Borough Council, it appeared that parking meters in the struggling business district of Lansford would be removed.
There was a motion made and seconded for the meter removal. The motion was made by council member Mary Soberick, who said there is "minimal business" and "half of (the meters) don't work."Her motion was seconded by Joe Butrie. But councilman Tommy Vadyak spoke up and said the meters are needed "to keep vehicles moving." He said once they are removed, they likely would never be put back.Soberick then rescinded her motion.A random check of the meters indicate some don't have heads on the posts, some don't let you add coins, and some have a red message inside them indicating they are not working."I always believed we should remove the meters," Soberick said.Council member Rosemary Cannon said new meters are included in a Streetscape Grant that has already been approved for the borough. The streetscape work will begin in spring 2015, according to Martin Ditsky, president of the council. After Soberick rescinded the motion to end the meters, she then urged that nonworking meters be covered until they can be repaired. In other business:• The council agreed to compile a list of drivers for snowplowing duties, especially those with commercial licenses, before winter arrives.• Butrie told the council the roof of the borough garage where salt is stored is in danger of collapsing. "Somebody is going to get hurt," he said.Cannon expressed frustration that the borough hasn't moved sooner on the matter. "We talked about this last year. We talked about this the year before," she said.Butrie suggested having a salt shed constructed.Vadyak said a pole building could be built for about $65,000. Soberick was skeptical of the cost, stating the fire department constructed a pole building and it cost $250,000.The municipal administration committee will look into what options are available.• The council agreed to sell an 8-foot plow to the highest bidder, with the minimum bid of $500.• It was agreed to advertise for fuel oil bids with the supply period being from Nov. 20 to Aug. 1, 2015. The deadline for bidding will be Nov. 12.• Trick-or-treat night will be held on Oct. 30, said Mayor James Romankow.
