Carbon buys Lansford office for magistrate

The district magistrate's office in Lansford will soon have a new owner.

On Thursday, the Carbon County Commissioners voted to enter into an agreement of sale with Gail Cheety of New Jersey, executor of the estate of Donald Brunda, who formerly owned the office at 417 E. Ridge St. The purchase price is $87,000.The property currently houses District Judge Casimir Kosciolek's offices.Commissioners' Chairman Wayne Nothstein said that the county will now do a title search and start the purchase process and should go to closing by the end of the year.Commissioner Thomas J. Gerhard said that when it was owned by Brunda, the county paid $4,900 a quarter to lease the building, meaning that the county spent approximately $20,000 annually.He said the county will still contact the same businesses to maintain the property as it did when it was being leased.In other matters, the commissioners acted on the following items:• Approved the reappointment of Joseph Sebelin of Jim Thorpe as a community representative; and Grace Riggio of Lehighton, Victor Pituch of Nesquehoning and Anthony DiMiceli of Nesquehoning as consumer representatives for the Area Agency on Aging Advisory Board. The term will expire June 30, 2015.• Accepted the resignation of Amy J. Butterfield of Lehighton as a part-time corrections officer, effective Oct. 29.• Accepted the resignation of Matthew J. Rapa of Andreas as an assistant public defender, effective Dec. 1.• Accepted the resignation of Angelo M. Rodriguez III of PortCarbon as a corrections officer, effective Oct. 22.• Accepted the resignation of Michael D. Smith of Barnesville as part-time corrections officer, effective Oct. 28.• Changed the status of Daniel D. Rimbey of Jim Thorpe and Chad S. Swedar of Tamaqua, from part-time corrections officers to part-time corrections officer/ Teamsters, effective Oct. 27.
