Palmerton champ honored by State House

Former Palmerton Area High School track star Austin Shupp was recognized by the State House Monday for his season at the 2014 PIAA Track and Field Championships, said Rep. Doyle Heffley (R-Carbon).

Heffley presented Shupp with a legislative citation for his accomplishments.Shupp won the 110-meter hurdles, and placed second in the 300-meter hurdles at the championship, but he credited his relays as his most rewarding races. He and his team placed third in the 400-meter relay.Shupp has been named twice as outstanding male Track Athlete of the Year, named to the All-State Pennsylvania Track and Field Team for the 100- and 300-meter hurdles, and is a State Games of America champion in the 100- and 400-meter hurdles. He also won every hurdles race he entered as a Blue Bombers senior, with the exception of his final one at states. He won Colonial League and District 11 titles, set league and district records, and, at the league meet, he set a school record in the triple jump, with a distance of 47-feet, 2 1/2 inches. He is now a freshman at Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania."Being a student-athlete, it's not easy to balance all of the activities between school, homework and practices, as well any other activities, and that's what makes Austin's achievements so very special," Heffley said.
