Computers, ammo seized in search of Frein's house

Computers, computer hardware, ammunition and a night vision device were among items seized during an early morning raid at the Canadensis home suspected cop killer Eric Matthew Frein shared with his parents, according a search warrant inventory return obtained Friday by The Times-Tribune, a Times-Shamrock newspaper.

State police raided the home at 308 Seneca Lane at 4:10 a.m. on Sept. 16, about 20 hours after Frein was identified as a suspect in the Sept. 12 ambush outside the Blooming Grove police barracks in Pike County that killed Cpl. Bryon K. Dickson II of Dunmore and wounded Trooper Alex T. Douglass of Olyphant.Authorities sought special permission for a nighttime raid at the home, owned by Eugene and Deborah Frein, claiming an emergency situation existed as there was a strong probability important evidence might be destroyed or compromised.Among the concerns was the life span of trace evidence, which would include possible gunshot r esidue on clothing as well as soil and or vegetation transferred from the scene of the shooting to the home. There was also a possibility that electronic evidence from cellphones and computers that may have been used in the planning or execution of the crimes could be destroyed.Eric Matthew Frein, 31, was identified as a suspect after a man walking his dog found a Jeep Cherokee registered to his parents partially submerged in a retaining pond near the crime scene at around 8:30 a.m. on Sept. 15.The inventory return shows police seized three computers, four laptops and tablets, three hard drives, four memory cards and three computer hard drives. They also took other items, including six paper targets, various "writings," several pictures and photographs, bullets, cigarette packs and a book entitled "Sniper Training and Employment."The inventory also notes police recovered one "Armasight Night Vision" - a device that allows users to see in the dark - but do es not specify what type of device was found. At a press conference earlier last week, Lt. Col. George Bivens said police found evidence Frein searched the Internet for survival methods and on how to avoid a police manhunt, which indicated he had planned the ambush for years. He did not say whether that evidence was obtained from computers seized from the Frein home or someone else, saying only that it was a computer to which Frein had access. Frein's own computer revealed no information because he had removed the hard drive. The search warrants were filed with District Magistrate Judge Michael Muth in East Stroudsburg. The documents had been kept from public view until Friday, however, because police had not filed the inventory returns. In addition to the Frein home, police also obtained a warrant to search the East Stroudsburg apartment Frein's friend, Justin Smith. Ammunition and 10 dirty gun cleaning patches were seized in that search. They also extracte d data from Smith's cellphone.Bivens on Friday said police are continuing to analyze various evidence as they continue to search for Frein, who remained at large as of Friday.tbesecker@timesshamrock.com
