Marian rolls past Panther Vy.
Before the season began, Marian head coach Stan Dakosty was adamant in preseason interviews that the Colts program was a defense first program.
So far in 2014, the stats back up coach Dakosty's declaration. The Colts have given up just seven points in their first two weeks of competition and the result is a 2-0 start. There is no denying the Marian defense came to play on Friday night against rival Panther Valley, as they held the Panthers to just 70 total yards en route to a 52-0 convincing Anthracite Football League victory. The Panthers (0-2, 0-2 AFL) certainly didn't help their cause, fumbling the ball in each of their first two possessions, giving the Colts great field position each time. Marian then took advantage, scoring off both of the PV miscues and jumping out to a 12-0 lead in the first quarter."We turned the ball over twice in the first quarter and that hurt us," said Panther Valley coach Matt Davis. "Then we kind-of battled them the rest of the first half and our effort was great, but then in the second half we gave up a little bit. We just played a really sloppy game tonight."The Colts, like most solid teams do, took advantage of the mismatches and one clear mismatch for the Panthers was Marian wide receiver/defensive end Angelo Maskornick. The 6-2, 200-pound wideout dominated on both offense and defense, making big plays throughout the game. He finished with 140 yards receiving and two touchdowns, while coming up with eight tackles and two sacks from his defensive end position."I just want to thank my teammates and my coaches for putting me in the best position out there to make plays, and thank god I made them," said Maskornick. "The line did a great job blocking for Ethan (Kuczynski) on those long pass plays and I was able to go up and get the ball. I'm just really excited about the way we're playing football right now."Maskornick's partner in crime on the night was quarterback Ethan Kuczynski, who extremely efficient from under center. The sophomore was 6-of-9 for 193 yards, throwing three touchdowns, utilizing the play action game on his two deep touchdown passes of 65 and 33 yards to Maskornick. The Colts scored again before the half, taking a 20-0 lead into intermission and then literally hit the ground running in the second half, with four different Colts rushing for a touchdown. Nico Agosti, Nathan Litsch, Gunnar Rehrig and Anthony Collevechio all scored for Marian in the second half putting the game way out of reach for the Panthers. It was a win that gives Marian, which opened with a powerful Williams Valley team and then a huge rival in Panther Valley, some momentum moving forward."Panther Valley is a very dangerous team, but they turned the ball over early, which helped us get out to a great start," said Dakosty. "Playing a rivalry game like this early in the season made me a nervous wreck a little bit, but we jumped on them when they made mistakes and things went our way."For the Panthers, a 52-0 loss after a hard fought game with Schuylkill Haven in week one is not something Davis or his players were planning on."This was not a good night for anybody wearing a Panthers uniform from top to bottom," said Davis, "We've been preaching that we want to get better every week and tonight we took a step back. We will get better and I told our guys if they don't want to work hard and get better then don't come on Monday."We have a good group of kids here and the goal is to get better every week, We want players with a winning attitude on this team."
