Lehighton cruises to win over Miners
For the second straight week, the Lehighton football team got off to a fast start.
And for the second straight week, the Indians came away with a win. After defeating Mahanoy Area in its Anthracite Football League opener on the road last week, Lehighton looked even more comfortable at home against Minersville, cruising to a 50-8 victory."We've learned that we can compete in this league (AFL) when we always knew we could," tailback Wyatt Clements said of the Indians' 2-0 start to the season. "We're going to bring hard football."After scoring two touchdowns a week ago, Clements was once again a catalyst for the Indians' offense, racking up 132 yards rushing while also scoring four touchdowns on the ground. And facing a Minersville team that fell 35-0 to Jim Thorpe last week and is coming off a 1-9 season, Lehighton could have easily looked past the Battlin' Miners. But the Indians didn't, as a 36-0 halftime score proved. That fact, maybe more than any other, is what Lehighton head coach Tom McCarroll is most proud of."We've talked about that and that's been our message from the time that we decided to come into this league. We know we're going to get everybody's best shot," McCarroll said of keeping his team focused. "That's been our mentality and we've tried to prepare our kids for that both mentally and physically."Even though we won the game pretty handily last week, I thought our kids were a little bit sloppy. And we knew we were going to get their (Minersville's) best effort and we had to be prepared for that, and I'm really pleased with the way our kids came out tonight and executed."The Indians' success wasn't limited to Clements, as Tyler Cann showed that he's more than capable of taking over a game with his arm and his legs. And besides his obvious skill, Cann also showed incredible poise against the Battlin' Miners. On fourth and 26 with just under 10 minutes to go in the second quarter, Cann hit Tyler Crum for a 29-yard TD that put Lehighton up 20-0.On their very next drive, Cann scampered 20 yards for another score, which he followed with a successful two-point conversion run to give the Indians a 28-0 advantage. The performances of Clements, Cann, Crum and others are ones McCarroll certainly doesn't take for granted."It's great and it's a nice luxury to have," the coach said. "I know we're not going to be lucky enough to able to have that all the time, but it helps for us in terms of game planning and it obviously creates some problems for our opponents, which is what we want to do. Being able to spread the ball around to a couple different people is a nice luxury to have."Clements scored his fourth and final touchdown minutes into the second half, after the Indians recovered a Minersville fumble near the goal line and punched it in two plays later. But Lehighton also got another solid performance from its defense, holding Minersville to 136 yards of total offense and five first downs, a facet of the game Clements was also heavily involved in."Offense is a real key point for us, but defense is something we really focus on," the junior said. "We always stress defense and that's what wins games."With the team firing on all cylinders, Lehighton looks like a team to be reckoned with heading into next week's showdown against AFL favorite North Schuylkill."It's going to be an exciting game," McCarroll said. "It's here, but we know they (North Schuylkill) travel well and we're going to get their best shot."They're big upfront on both sides of the ball and they have athletes. They probably have just as many athletes as we do, and they're going to matchup well with us and we have to try to matchup well with them. It's going to be a challenge for us, but we have plans for it."
