Nine cars derailed on the Jersey Central Railroad early today along Lehigh Avenue in Mauch Chunk, opposite the Mertz Cities Service Station.

The wreck occurred at 3:35 a.m. shortly after the Jersey Central freight CJ4 left the local yards with 110 cars. As it was going through a switch, the 35th car and eight cars following it were derailed.Four of the cars overturned. John Hawk, Weissport, was the engineer and James Volovski of Jim Thorpe the conductor. There were no injuries.
