Doris Sturtevant, a resident of Heritage Hill Senior Community, will celebrate her 100th birthday on Friday.
Born on June 27, 1914, in Weatherly, she was the daughter of Harry and Mary (Rehrig) Wertman.Doris was married to Robert B. Sturtevant until his death in 1982.They have a son, Robert H. Sturtevant of Weatherly.Doris attended school in Weatherly and graduated from Weatherly High School in 1931.Following graduation, she worked in the family business, Wertman's Hardware Store, with her father and brother, Bill.She then accepted employment with the War Department in Newport News, Virginia, during World War II.Following the war, Doris returned home to Weatherly and assisted her husband with Sturtevant's Store.She was well-known for her homemade chocolate syrup that was used on the ice cream sundaes in their store.During the 1960s, the Sturtevants were the administrators of the Carbon County Home in Laurytown and opened the new Weatherwood facility in Weatherly in the early 1970s.A member of Zions Lutheran Evangelical Church, Doris was a member of the Busy Bees and the Cranberry Quilters, an honorary member of the Weatherly Flower Club and was certified as a state level flower show judge.Doris has always been an avid reader and crossword puzzle fan, and even with the loss of most of her eyesight due to macular degeneration, she continues to enjoy an average of two audio books per week.
