Races lacking in Tuesday's primary election in Schuylkill
Voters in Schuylkill County will have little to choose from in Tuesday's primary election.
There are few races of local interest, with much of the focus on the Democratic race for the nomination for governor to face off against Republican incumbent Tom Corbett in the fall.Republican voters do have a race for the nomination for the 17th Congressional District.The 17th District includes all of Schuylkill and Lackawanna counties, and parts of Carbon including the townships of East Penn, Franklin, Lower Towamensing, Mahoning and Towamensing and the boroughs of Bowmanstown, Jim Thorpe, Lansford, Lehighton, Nesquehoning, Palmerton, Parryville, Summit Hill and Weissport. It also includes parts of Northampton, Luzerne, Lackawanna and Monroe counties, including the townships of Chestnuthill, Polk and Ross.Schuylkill County coroner Dr. David J. Moylan is one of three vying for the GOP nod to face off against incumbent Democratic Congressman Matt Cartwright.Moylan is facing Matt Connolly and Matthew Dietz, both of Northampton County, for the nomination.Cartwright is completing his first term. He defeated incumbent Democrat Tim Holden for the Democratic nomination two years ago. The district was redrawn for the 2012 election. After defeating Holden, Cartwright, of Scranton, went on to easily win the seat in the general election over Republican challenger Laureen Cummings.Governor's raceCorbett, of Allegheny County, is unopposed for the GOP nod for another term as governor and will face off against one of four Democrats running for their party's spot to face him in the November general election.Seeking the Democratic nomination for governor are Tom Wolf, of York County; Robert M. McCord, of Montgomery County; Katie McGinty, of Chester County; and Allyson Y. Schwartz, of Montgomery County.Corbett's present lieutenant governor, Jim Cawley, is seeking another term and is unopposed.There are five candidates seeking the Democratic nod for lieutenant governor. They are Mike Stack, Philadelphia County; Mark Critz, Cambria County; Mark Smith, Bradford County; Brandon P. Neuman, Washington County; and Brad Koplinski, of Dauphin County.Republican voters will also be electing three members to the Republican State committee four-year term.There are six candidates. The ballot instructs voters to vote for "one male, one female and one either gender."The candidates are Scott R. Thomas, Pottsville; Carolyn L. Bonkoski, West Brunswick Township; George Moyer, Norwegian Township; Ron Boltz, Pine Grove Township; Kyle Heffner, Pottsville; and Mary Beth Dougherty, Girardville.There is also a four-year term on the county Republican Committee to be elected with no names on the ballot for that post or for an alternate position on the county committee, two to be nominated.State HouseIncumbent Jerry Knowles, of Rush Township, is seeking the nomination for another term in the state house's 124th District.The 124th district includes parts of Berks and Schuylkill counties. In Schuylkill it includes the boroughs of Tamaqua, Coaldale, Deer Lake, New Ringgold, Port Clinton, Ringtown, McAdoo and Orwigsburg, and the townships of East Brunswick, East Union, Kline, North Union, Rush, Schuylkill, Union, Walker, West Brunswick and West Penn.In Berks County, the district includes the boroughs of Hamburg, Lenhartsville and Shoemakersville, and the townships of Albany, Greenwich, Maidencreek, Ontelaunee, Perry and Windsor.Knowles has held the position since 2009. He has no opposition and the Democratic party has no candidate listed on the ballot.Incumbent Democrat Neil P. Goodman is seeking another term in the 123rd District.The district is totally in Schuylkill County and includes the boroughs of Ashland, Frackville, Gilberton, Girardville, Gordon, Mahanoy City, Middleport, Minersville, New Philadelphia, Palo Alto, Port Carbon, Shenandoah, Saint Clair, and the fifth and sixth wards of the city of Pottsville. Townships in the district are Blythe, Branch, Butler, Cass, Delano, East Norwegian, Foster, Mahanoy, New Castle, Norwegian, Reilly, Ryan and West Mahanoy.Goodman, of Mahanoy City, who has held the office since 1980, is unopposed.There is no Republican candidate on the ballot for the district.Incumbent Republican Mike Tobash is seeking another term in the 125th legislative district.The district includes the boroughs of Centerport and Leesport and the townships of Centre and Tilden in Berks County. In Schuylkill the district includes the boroughs of Cressona, Landingville, Mechanicsville, Mount Carbon, Pine Grove, Schuylkill Haven, Tower City, Tremont, and the first, second, third, fourth and seventh wards in Pottsville; and the townships of Eldred, Frailey, Hegins, Hubley, North Manheim, South Manheim, Tremont, Upper Mahantongo, Washington and Wayne.Tobash has held the seat since 2011.There is no Democratic candidate on the ballot.There are two positions for the state Democratic Committee, four-year term, to be nominated. There are two candidates on the ballot: Liz Bettinger, of Pottsville, and Laine S. Gehres, of Branch Township. One male and one female are to be elected.
