Monroe man heading to trial; accused of shooting neighbors

An Eldred Township man is heading to court on charges of killing his neighbors in March.

Garry Sherwood Flyte, 54, of Kunkletown is charged with shooting Jeffery A. Place, 54, and Place’s son Steven Powell, 30, at 6:50 p.m. March 19 at Place’s home on Meixsell Valley Road.Place was pronounced dead on the scene, and Powell died while undergoing surgery at Pocono Mountain Regional Medical Center, where he had been taken by ambulance. He could not be taken by medical helicopter due to torrential rains that evening.Flyte also shot the family German shepherd, according to information presented at a preliminary hearing Monday in front of District Judge Jolana Krawitz.Monroe County Coroner Bob Allen said Place was shot in the abdomen. Powell was shot in the right side and the bullet hit his stomach, Allen said.Flyte, represented by attorney James Gregor, remains in jail without bail.Read Tuesday’s Times News for more about the case.
