He was the school's winningest pitcher during his three years of varsity baseball action and also tossed countless no-hitters during his time at the school.Kuntz gained a reputation as a fireball southpaw in the Lehigh Valley Interscholastic League and Tri-County Junior American Legion Loop. Kuntz hurled the Lehighton Junior Legionnaires to the Tri-County Junior American Legion crown in 1951 with a 10-1 record. His outstanding performance in the circuit's annual all-star game at Tamaqua earned him a starting mound assignment in the All-East Legion game at Philadelphia's Shibe Park.In 1953, Kuntz, the fireballer of the Lehighton Junior American Legion Nine for three years, was signed by the Chicago White Sox and was assigned to the Wisconsin Rapids in Class D ball. The lanky Kuntz was compared to Dodgers' great Preacher Roe. He served up a wicked cross-fire, and along with his heater, at times threw a teasing slow hook.Kuntz was on pace to becoming a major league pitcher before a battle with cancer cut his career short and ended his life in 1955 at the age of 21."Put" was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Lee E. Kuntz of Union Hill, Weissport.Robert AndrewsAndrews attended Lehighton Area High School from 1948-1952.
