Powerful Tri-Valley routs Marian
After Thursday's eight-run loss to Minersville, the Marian Fillies looked to bounce back against a powerful Tri-Valley team one day later.
It didn't happen as the Lady Dawgs coasted to a 10 -1 win on Marian's home field in a Schuylkill League crossover game.In the top of the first inning, Fillies' pitcher Bethany Shaud retired the side in order on just five pitches. In the home half, Gabby Cann walked and stole second, but was left stranded as Tri-Valley's Katie Rabuck got Bryianna Pearson to foul out to third. The second inning was a different story for Shaud as the Dawgs scored five runs. Taryn Wilson started the rally with a single to right field and then after Catherine Troutman followed with a single to left, Haley Swalm walked before Jordan Ebersole and Wendy Header plated runs with base hits. A ground out scored Valley's fifth run in the inning.Meanwhile Rabuck retired five straight before Alex Stroia's infield hit in the third, but she was caught stealing ending any chance to score for the Fillies.Tri -Valley coach Marty Shade was pleased with everything his team did in its dominating victory."We pitched, we hit, and we ran, all against a good Marian team," said Shade. "And it was a Friday, when sometimes our girls can have other things on their minds than softball so what else can I say but it was a great team effort."The Dawgs would add a run in the fourth on a double to left by Ebersole who was 3-4 for the game and after moving to third on a sacrifice bunt, she scored on a ground out. Tri-Valley then put up a two- spot in both the fifth and sixth innings to put the game out of reach.Marian managed just another infield hit, this one by Lindsay Nemeth in the fourth until Stroia singled and scored on a double to left by Nemet in the sixth.Rabuck allowed one run on four hits. She walked two while fanning seven in leading Tri-Valley to its 11th win of the season.Despite two straight lopsided losses, Fillies' coach Joe De Angelo was not overly concerned."Both Minersville and Tri-Valley are powerhouse teams. We could have gotten out of a couple of innings with less damage if our infield made some plays today, but we've only had three practices on our home field so we are still adjusting," he said. "Early in the game we could have battled their pitcher a little more, but I thought we got better at bats on her late in the game."A tense moment for Marian occurred in the top of the sixth when Shaud appeared to be injured after she dove for a short pop fly that landed between the mound and home. Other than a leg bruise, she was fine and was able to complete the game.Nemeth and Stroia each contributed two hits for Marian, which fell to 8-3 on the season.Tri -Valley 050 122 0 - 10 12 0Marian 000 001 0 - 1 4 3Rabuck and Troutman; Shaud and Nemeth.
