Man sentenced to state prison for assaultand part in robbery
A Carbon County man, who previously admitted his part in the assault of a Lansford man in his home, and also to his part in the robbery of a Lansford convenience store, was sentenced to a state prison term Tuesday in the county court.
Raymond Ziegenfuss III, 19, of Lansford, was sentenced by Judge Steven R. Serfass to serve a total of three to six years in a state correctional institution. He previously pleaded guilty to one count each of criminal conspiracy-robbery and criminal conspiracy-aggravated assault. The assault charge was from an incident on Oct. 21, 2011, in which he participated in the attack of Christopher Herman at his home at 115 E. Snyder Ave., Lansford.Ziegenfuss was charged along with Steven Allen Walck, 28, Jennifer Steigerwalt, 36, and Kevin Marshall Brandwein, 24, all of Lansford. All have been sentenced to state prison terms for their part in the incident. The four were accused of beating Herman, tying him up, and then stabbing him in the back several times, attempting to kill him.Police said Walck was the one who stabbed Herman, who was hospitalized at the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township, but has since recovered.Ziegenfuss also admitted his part in the robbery of the Turkey Hill Market, 22-32 W. Patterson St. in Lansford on Aug. 28, 2013. He was one of five charged in connection with that incident. Also charged was Scott Heffelfinger, 26, of Tamaqua; John A. Simonson, 19, Nicole Christman, 19, and Alyssa Gryzik, 18, all of Lansford. All have entered pleas in the case. Heffelfinger is awaiting sentencing while the others have already gone through the court system.Police charged that Christman, Gryzik, and Ziegenfuss helped plan the robbery. Heffelfinger and Simonson entered the store and confronted the clerk. Taken was a bag of money and cigarettes.Defense attorney Stephen Vlossak, court appointed, said his client was a "follower" not a "doer." He said in the assault incident Ziegenfuss never harmed anyone. He said he participated in the entry to the home but did not go down the basement where Herman was stabbed. He also asked the court to consider his young age and sentence Ziegenfuss in the lower end of the state sentencing guidelines which could mean a county sentence.Vlossak said Ziegenfuss was the father of a young child and has another one on the way.Ziegenfuss told Serfass, "I'm just sorry for what I did."Serfass rejected the request for a county prison term. He said the fact Ziegenfuss is a follower and not a doer does not excuse him from his part in a "horrific crime."Serfass said the incident with Herman could have resulted in a death. In addition to the jail term, Serfass ordered Ziegenfuss to have no contact with any of the victims in both cases or the co-defendants, get both a drug and alcohol and mental health evaluation, supply a DNA sample, make total restitution of $188.70, and render 150 hours of community service when released on parole. He must also pay court costs, which average about $1,000.He was given credit of 162 days spent in jail on the robbery and 196 days on the assault charge.
