Inquest slated in Schuylkill inmate's death

Matthew Koncsler was found dead in Schuylkill County prison cell at 7:30 a.m. Sunday, March 31, 2013, six days after his 21st birthday and five days into a three-to-18 month sentence for selling a $40 bag of marijuana. He was last seen alive by jail staff when they locked him in his cell at 10 p.m. the previous night.

Now, almost a year later, an inquest is being held in Schuylkill County court to try to determine the manner of Koncsler's death, what killed him, and whether it was natural or at his own or another's hand.Jurors were selected Friday. Assistant District Attorney John Fegley said the jurors, three men and three women, would convene at 1 p.m. March 19. However, he cautioned the date was tentative. The inquest may be open to the public or closed, as the coroner decides.Inquests, which are inquiries into the cause and manner of death, are called by a county coroner and heard by six jurors. Inquests are not common. The last one held in Schuylkill County was more than 10 years ago.An autopsy failed to reveal the cause of Koncsler's death; officials at the time said there was no indication of foul play.Efforts to reach District Attorney Christine Holman and coroner David Moylan were unsuccessful Friday.
