Martinez making a name in MMA

Breakdown.Takedown.You're busted.That's been the inevitable fate that's awaited challengers who have stepped into the ring with Mixed Martial Arts fighter Brett Martinez.With a knack for take downs, Martinez has parlayed his wrestling background into a successful career in the no-holds-barred sport."I like to work on my feet," said Martinez, 26. "My comfort zone is wrestling."Just six fights into his professional MMA career, Martinez who competes in the 145-pound and 155-pound weight classes sports a record of 5-1.The results should come as no surprise to those who have followed the career of the Walnutport native.A standout wrestler during his years at Northern Lehigh High School, Martinez was a four-time District 11 medalist and a third place regional champion.Upon graduating from NLHS in 2005, Martinez attended Kutztown University, where he was a two-time Regional medalist, and a two-time placer in PSAC.With wrestling still in his blood, Martinez decided to ratchet it up a notch and take the bold leap into the world of MMA fighting.As an amateur, Martinez sported a 4-1 record.He encouraged those with aspirations to compete in MMA to have a solid wrestling background."The sport is evolving, and the guys today are good wrestlers, grapplers, and stand-up fighters," he said. "They're all-around athletes."An assistant coach for the Northern Lehigh High School wrestling team, Martinez trains at Rat Pack Fighting Systems, in Palmerton, and American Top Team, in Bethlehem.Recently, Martinez signed a five-fight deal with Xtreme Fight Events (XFE).His next fight is scheduled for April 12, at the Sands Casino in Bethlehem."I take it one fight at a time, and see where it takes me," he said. "I'm trying to get as far as I can get."
