Car hits bicyclist in Schuylkill County
A Schuylkill County man was injured when the bicycle he was riding was struck from behind by a car. The crash was one of several investigated by state police at Schuylkill Haven.
Troopers said Frank L. Pugh, 58, of Saint Clair, was riding a bike northbound on SR61 in Norwegian Township, about 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 23, in the right travel lane when his bike was struck in the rear by a 2014 Volkswagen SUV driven by Patrice A. Gangemi, 39, of Pottsville.Upon impact Pugh was flew backwards off the bike and struck the front windshield of the Volkswagen. He then fell to the ground.Pugh, who suffered moderate injuries, troopers said, was taken by ambulance to the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township. Gangemi was not injured.Troopers said Pugh was wearing dark clothing and did not have proper lighting on his bike. He was cited for lighting requirements, troopers added.A one-vehicle crash was reported at 3:07 p.m. on Thursday along the Port Carbon Highway in East Norwegian Township. Troopers said Esther M. Zelwalk, 51, of Saint Clair, was driving a 1998 Subaru Legacy Outback northbound when her vehicle hit a patch of ice. The car went onto the berm and became airborne and went over a small embankment and struck the ground with its undercarriage. After impact the car traveled across the road and struck a tree where it came to rest.Zelwalk was injured and taken to the Schuylkill Medical Center-E. Norwegian St., Pottsville.Another one-vehicle crash was reported about 4:22 p.m. Thursday along Gap St., in Hegins Township. Troopers said George A. Wolfe, 47, of the village of Muir, Porter Township, was driving a 2013 Toyota Corolla southbound as snow was falling. While negotiating a left curve the Corolla traveled over a slushy area causing Wolfe to lose control. The car traveled across both lanes and onto the east berm and up a slight embankment where it impacted with a tree on the driver's side front. After impacting with the tree, the car overturned and came to rest on its roof along the east berm.Wolfe was not injured but the vehicle had to be towed from the scene. Wolfe was cited for driving a vehicle at a (un) safe speed.Another one vehicle crash occurred about 7:59 p.m. on Thursday along Maple Avenue in Norwegian Township. Troopers said a 16-year-old male from Minersville was driving a 2008 Pontiac G6 eastbound when he lost control on the snow-covered road. The car went onto the north berm and struck a tree. After impact the car re-entered the road and came to rest in the westbound lane.The driver and three passengers, another 16-year-old male and two females, ages 15 and 16, all from Pottsville, were all not injured.The teen was cited for driving too fast for conditions.Troopers investigated a one-vehicle crash about 9:27 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 24, along Deiberts Valley Road, in South Manheim Township. Troopers said Ryan E. Dreher, 26, of Schuylkill Haven, was driving a 2009 Dodge Ram truck eastbound when he observed a deer along the embankment of the north berm. Dreher became distracted with the deer, traveled onto the south berm and impacted with a tree with the right front of the truck.Dreher was not injured, but the truck had to be towed from the scene. He was cited for driving on roadways laned for traffic.
