Two adults and a teen fled into the street in early morning darkness Saturday after fire broke out in their Dutch Hill home in Tamaqua.
Homeowner Kenneth Perpignan, Tammy Blew, and a teenage boy were awaked by smoke detectors about 1:30 a.m. and were able to make it safely outside at their 317 Glenwood Ave. house.Flames reportedly made their way up and through inside walls of the wood frame building, half of a duplex in a narrow alley between Union and Willing streets.Responding were all four companies of the Tamaqua Fire Department, plus the borough's rescue squad, ambulance, fire police, and police.Glenwood Avenue is an alley so narrow that fire trucks could not enter, forcing firefighters to drag hoses and equipment from nearby Market Street and other locationsMembers of the Tamaqua Volunteers group provded hot beverages during the chilly night.The cause of the fire is believed to be a woodburning stove, said fire officials. The stove was in use on the first floor and reportedly had been fully loaded prior to the family retiring for the night.The occupants reportedly are staying with relatives in Minersville.Perpignan purchased the house six years ago, according to county records. An unoccupied dwelling at 319 Glenwood Ave. also sustained damage.The American Red Cross is assisting the victims.An account has also been set up at Wells Fargo Bank to benefit the displaced family.
