Moon wins fifth term as Register of Wills

There was only one contested race for Carbon County row offices yesterday, but it provided plenty of excitement.

Incumbent Judy Moon of Nesquehoning, a Democrat, retained her register of wills seat by just 452 votes over political newcomer Jean Papay of Palmerton, a Republican. Moon got 4,982 - or 52.32 percent of the votes - compared to Papay's 4,530 ballots, or 47.57 percent of the votes.Moon was at the Carbon County Election Headquarters Tuesday night and it wasn't until after the final tallies arrived at about 10:45 p.m. that Moon declared herself the winner.This will be the fifth full term in office for Moon, but the first time in years with an opponent.There were two other row office holders who had terms expiring, but neither had opposition.Ronald J. Sheehan was retained as county treasurer, getting a county high total of 7,116 complementary votes.William C. McGinley got re-elected as clerk of courts with 6,946 votes.Both Sheehan and McGinley are Democrats.
