A one-car accident in Mahoning Township early this morning claimed two lives, including a Mahoning Township supervisor.
Linda L. Benner, 66, and Bonita Aniskevich, 51, both of Mahoning Township, were killed as a result of injuries in the accident which happened on Route 209 between Lehighton and Jim Thorpe.Benner has been a township supervisor since 2010.She was reportedly the driver of the car and was pronounced dead at the scene by Carbon County Deputy Coroner Robert Miller Jr.Aniskevich was transported to the Gnaden Huetten Campus of Blue Mountain Health System in Lehighton. She was pronounced dead in the emergency room by Dr. Dombrosky.Carbon County Coroner Bruce Nalesnik said both of the women died from traumatic injuries.Nalesnik said there were no apparent witnesses to the accident.The accident was reportedly discovered at about 12:45 a.m.Audie Mertz, officer-in-charge of the Mahoning Township Police Department, said when officers arrived, they found a vehicle sitting sideways in the northbound lane.The vehicle, a Kia Forte, was traveling towards Lehighton when it went off the right hand shoulder striking the mountain head-on, police said. The cause of the accident is under investigation.The Lehighton Fire Department, Lehighton Ambulance, Mahoning Township Police, Lehighton Police, Jim Thorpe Police, and Lehighton fire police assisted at the scene.
