Ed Smith elected by Legion as 13th District Commander

Edward C. Smith of Tamaqua was elected recently to serve as the 13th District Commander of the Pennsylvania American Legion, at the recent District meeting held on June 18 in Shenandoah.

The 13th District covers 26 posts within Schuylkill County.Smith served in the U.S. Army at the end of the Vietnam Era from 1975 to 1978 and has since served in numerous positions in his local Tamaqua American Legion, including post commander for four years.Smith, who officially starting his term July 1, will be ceremoniously sworn into his new position on Sunday July 21 in Harrisburg by the outgoing Pennsylvania State Commander Joe Cocco of Shenandoah during the American Legion State Convention. Smith also served as a State Assistant Sgt at Arms for Commander Cocco's years as Commander, and held the position of Deputy Commander for four years for the District.He is the father of two children, Edward Jr. of Tamaqua and Kristie Hess of Port Matilda and three grandchildren, Haley, Diana and Michael. He is also the proud son of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel L. Smith of Tamaqua. Smith added that he has two brothers, Daniel of Lake Hauto and James from Wylie Texas, that are also veterans."Many people don't know what the Legion is all about," said Smith. "It's not just a barroom for cheap drinks."Smith stated his goal for the district is to seek improved membership in the American Legion, as well as to continue its growth and community involvement.Ed stated that the four pillars of the American Legion are: Fostering a strong national security, taking care of veterans, mentoring the youth of our nation, and promoting patriotism and honor.
