Weissport Redneck Festival highlighted in Pa. Magazine

The Weissport Redneck Festival has gotten statewide attention in the July/August issue of the Pennsylvania Magazine.

You Might Be a Redneck If" is the title of the three-page spread, that gives people reading the story a feeling of stepping into an old fashioned good fun, camaraderie and red neck atmosphered festival. The writer, Cynthia Underhill, obviously had a great time watching the events unfold in 2012, from the free Big Wheel race for youngsters to other events, including the bed race, chariot race and the Junkman's contest, which features contestants vying to load up their trucks in the fastest time possible to win the pile of scrap. There is also a hot wing contest, watermelon eating contest, ugliest truck contest and tug-a-war.Local beauties wearing cut off shorts hope to win the Daisy Duke Contest and fellows compete to be Mr. Redneck.Apparently Underhill wandered around to play the games, visit the vendors and taste the local fare."One vendor even had a deer head mounted on his truck," she wrote. The magazine is chock full of stories about people and places of interest and photos highlighting activities, wildlife and historical sites across PennsylvaniaThe festival is always held the weekend before Labor Day."Even rednecks need vacation," said Duane Dellecker, who organizes the festival with the help of his faithful committee."Over the years, the festival, which celebrates all things considered 'redneck' has helped fund improvements to the park in the center of town, including additions to the gazebo, electricity and water. In the years since the event began, the crowds have grown, but the festival maintains its small town feel," writes Underhill.Underhill clearly had captured the festival's atmosphere in her story. The festival has branched out to include Friday night events, entertainment and food. The festival will be held Friday, Aug. 30, from 5 to 10 p.m.; and on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 31 and Sept. 1, from noon to 10 p.m.
