Bumpy parking lot to be paved

For those who are visiting the Lehigh Canal Park at Weissport there is good news.

The parking lot will be paved this summer.Presently the parking lot surface is a layer of fine dirt with potholes throughout, but bids for the paving project have gone out and the paving of the parking lot should happen soon.Members of the Lehigh Canal Recreation Commission said that the project had been anticipated to be completed by the end of June, but due to unforeseen circumstances, the project is now slated for July.In preparation of the paving project, cement stops have been removed."We've been filling in the holes and the next week, it's the same," said Dennis Bauchpies, commission chairman. "So we've decided to pave it over."Bauchpies also reported that the garage roof has been replaced by Doug Ahner of AB Construction at a cost of $29,000. Ahner donated his labor to replace the roof.Palmerton Garage Door also sold the garage door at a discount cost of $775 and Palmerton Lumber donated the metal for the roof at cost. The building is used by the Lehigh Canal Recreation Commission to store equipment and signs. The building is block construction. The Commission is planning a controlled burn at Lock 13 in Parryville to get rid of debris that was part of a recent cleanup at the Lock 13 with the Beltzville Lions Club.Commission members note that they have received a state grant of $20,000, which does help with expenses since the communities are still accessed at 10 cents a person a year, which does not bring in enough income to pay expenses at the park.
