Woman's Club of Lehighton honors young artists in the community

Members of the Lehighton Woman's Club got a look at the world of art through the eyes and talent of the young.

Nancy R. Carlson, club president, welcomed members of both the Lehighton and Nesquehoning Woman's Club, and family members and friends of the young people who shared their artistic and performing arts talents at the club's Annual Spring Tea.The event recently was held at Trinity Lutheran Church hall.Back for the 11th year along with a talented art student was Mike Reenock, art teacher at Lehighton Area High School. Reenock said that he was honored to be able to feature one of his brightest and most talented art students."She is someone I've seen grow up and develop as she was one of my first students in elementary school," said Reenock. "It makes me feel good to teach someone like her."Featured was Rowan Laitila, daughter of Xandra Ahner and David Laitila.Laitila was recognized as the Lehighton Woman's Club Art Student of the Year and was presented an art scholarship. She will study art history at Temple University Tyler School of Art in the fall.As part of the presentation, Laitila presented three art pieces in three different mediums. She had a landscape painting that was painted using black tea, along with a sculpture and a ceramic piece.Reenock said that Laitila was already recognized as a budding young artist at the Pennsylvania Scholastic Artist and Writing Awards program, where she was awarded a Gold Key Award for the second year in a row.Following Laitila's presentation, members of the TNT Dance Studio performed a tap, ballet and jazz routine.Carlson noted that the Woman's Club of Lehighton will be celebrating its 100th anniversary at a banquet to be held June 5 at the Mahoning Valley Country Club, when the history of the club will be showcased. Carlson thanked the past presidents committee for compiling the club's history.The evening concluded with members of both the Lehighton and Nesquehoning Woman's Club enjoying refreshments.
