Carbon County's first arthritis Walk-a-Thon held in Lehighton and Mahoning Valley was a huge success, according to Ervin L. Hawk of Lehighton, chairman of the event. The Walk-A-Thon, which was for the Arthritis, with all proceeds to be used to conduct and continue clinics at the Gnaden Huetten Memorial Hospital and to further research, had a total of 746 walkers with only 11 not completing the 20-mile walk through picturesque Mahoning Valley.
