Car stolen in Tamaqua, crashed in West Penn

Tamaqua Police are looking for the person(s) who crashed a vehicle in West Penn Township after reportedly stealing it from a Tamaqua home on New Year's Eve.

According to police, after returning home from taking care of a few New Year's Eve errands, Matthew and Donna Moyer of North Railroad Street in Tamaqua were alarmed to find that their employer's vehicle was missing from the side of their home. They estimated the vehicle, a blue 2000 Ford Taurus, was stolen some time between 8 p.m. and midnight.Tamaqua Police, with assistance of a few Tamaqua Crime Watchers, spent the next few hours searching the streets in Tamaqua for the stolen car with no success.Around 11 a.m. Sunday, churchgoers in West Penn reported seeing a car heavily damaged against a utility pole on Birch Crossing Road.West Penn Police Chief Brian Johnson arrived and determined no one was in the vehicle. A 50-foot trail of blood could be seen leading north away from the car to the intersection of Zions Stone Church Road.Johnson pointed out that the driver also left blood and hair stuck in the front windshield, which was damaged apparently from the driver's head. After impounding the vehicle, Johnson searched the surrounding areas and streets for any sign of the injured driver, with no success.Tamaqua Police pointed out that the suspect, who wasn't wearing a seat belt, would probably be suffering from multiple injuries, such as a head wound, and could possibly be wearing caps or hats to cover his head injury.Police are asking anyone who has information about the theft or crash to call them at (570) 668-5000.
