One last chance to finish in the top half

It's getting a little interesting as THE TIMES NEWS Pigskin Prognosticators get set to make their final Grid Picks of the 2011 football season.

I lost by going with two locals last weekend, but Northern Lehigh and Tamaqua both deserved that vote of confidence with the season that they both put together.I also pulled within a game of the top half of the bracket and fifth place held by Brad Hurley and Mike Haines, another on in the top half, has now dropped down and sits tied with me in sixth place.Andy Steinmetz cut into leader Jason Boris' lead and trails by five games. Now it'll be interesting to see if Andy wimps out and goes with the favorites or if he'll go out on the limb a little bit to try and pick a couple of upsets and give Boris a run for his money.Looking at the other side of the standings, it's TJ Engle and Shawn McFarland battling it out for the basement, with Emmett McCall lingering just a bit ahead of them.Hats off to Bob Ford and Rod Heckman who look like they're safely tucked in to the top half of the standings. So as I take one last trip with the crystal ball, let the picks begin:STROUDSBURG AT EAST STROUDSBURG SOUTH - The Mountaineers travel to the Purple Pit for the annual Turkey Day contest and the underdog usually wins this one. I'll still go with the favorite and pick Stroudsburg, 28-14.CATASAUQUA AT NORTHAMPTON - Never count the Roughies out in this contest since the Kids have just three wins. I'll still pick the home team ... Northampton, 21-14.PHILLIPSBURG VS. EASTON - The Red Rovers have to be getting use to playing two games in three days by now. So in this Turkey Day matchup, I like ... Easton, 21-14.EASTON AT NAZARETH - Steve Shiffert's eleven will give it what they have left after the P'burg game. The Blue Eagles beat them earlier this year so it's ... Nazareth, 21-7.VALLEY VIEW AT ALLENTOWN CENTRAL CATHOLIC - Are the Vikings finally smelling that Hershey chocolate once again?? ... Central Catholic, 28-21.PEN ARGYL AT WILKES-BARRE GAR - I'd be willing to bet it doesn't get any tougher for the Green Knights until next week ... Pen Argyl, 35-7.CALVARY CHRISTIAN VS. PIUS X - The Royals like to pump up the volume on turf fields. This one is at Salisbury ... Pius X, 28-12.GARNET VALLEY AT COUNCIL ROCK SOUTH - Talked to an old Garnet Valley assistant coach to get the inside scoop on this one. Now I know why he moved on to coach at another school. He likes ... Council Rock South, 24-13.PENNSBURY AT NORTH PENN - Didn't pick the other North Penn that played Tamaqua last week and lost. This week, it's North Penn down south so I guess I'll pick them ... North Penn, 23-7.PHOENIXVILLE AT POTTSGROVE - After checking out scores of games that both teams played this season, I think I'll go with ... Pottsgrove, 30-14.SHAMOKIN VS. CLEARFIELD - Well I do like Clearfield White American Cheese over other brands ... Clearfield, 27-7.BLOOMSBURG AT MOUNT CARMEL - Do the Red Tornadoes own a home field advantage in the Silver Bowl like they did in the old days? This one should be a dandy ... Mount Carmel, 19-14.WYOMISSING VS. LANCASTER CATHOLIC - Just think that Lancaster Catholic will have just a little too much for Wyomissing ... Lancaster Catholic, 21-7.OLD FORGE VS. SOUTHERN COLUMBIA - The Tigers are still a tough team to beat in the post-season ... Southern Columbia, 28-12.COLUMBIA VS. CAMP HILL - Had to flip the coin on this one and almost went with the underdog, but it's ... Camp Hill, 14-13.
